Did you know that the most common chronic disease among kids aged 6-19 is cavities? Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that children between the ages of 14-17 are four times more likely to have cavities than asthma. Follow these five tips to help your child have, and keep, healthy teeth:

  1. Use fluoride. Check to see if your tap water has fluoride and if your child over age two has toothpaste that contains fluoride. Our dentists can provide you with fluoride supplements if your children needs more fluoride.
  2. Ask about dental sealants. Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth – usually the back teeth (the premolars and molars) to prevent tooth decay. The sealant forms a protective shield over the enamel of each tooth, stopping food from getting stuck in hard to clean fissures.
  3. Follow the “2×2” rule. Make sure your children brush their teeth two times a day, for two minutes each time. We recommend that our patients who wearing braces should brush 30 minutes after each meal or snack, plus every morning and night. This may sound like a lot of brushing, but braces create lots of hidden spaces where food can easily get stuck, causing bad breath and decay!
  4. Eat right. Educate your kids about how food choices play an important role in the health of our teeth and gums. Sugary and acidic foods weaken tooth enamel, paving the way for cavities. Sour and chewy candies are particularly harsh on children’s teeth, quickly leading to damage if enjoyed too often.
  5. Visit the dentist. Make sure you bring your child to the dentist every six months! Unlike adults, children’s mouths undergo many changes as they grow and require close supervision to make sure their adult teeth are growing in properly. Your dentist will be able to monitor your child’s health, make recommendations for braces, and ensure your child is healthy
