Braces have grown in popularity in recent years, thanks in part to their cosmetic appeal. Because all of the hardware is on the inside of your mouth they can sometimes be hard to clean. There are a few minor lifestyle changes you should keep in mind to help clean your braces and keep them from being damaged.
Chewing gum and sticky foods can easily get stuck in and around the wires, brackets and bands. This can bend wires or even break something loose. Hard and crunchy foods and bad habits like chewing on pencils, pens and ice, pose a similar threat. If something is damaged it can injure your mouth, and increase the amount of time you need to wear the braces.
Make sure to brush your teeth and floss twice per day. Floss threaders, and interdental brushes are very useful tools for removing food particles from between your teeth, and other hard to clean places. Dental water jets can also help loosen food particles and wash them away, however they cannot replace the effectiveness of using dental floss.
